STEVIA RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

POLLUTION-FREE

GLG Stevia has been certified as a Pollution-Free Agricultural product by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture.

TRAINING

GLG employs farm technicians that study the cultivation of stevia leaf and organize stevia training courses to educate our farmers on how to grow stevia.

TESTING

GLG tests stevia products pesticide content using third party labs – SGS according to the FDA standard.

NON-GMO

GLG’s proprietary strains (All Non-GMO) are significantly less prone to disease or pests enabling little to no use of pesticides.

SAFETY

The GLG agriculture team offers technological guidance to the co-operative society and growers, prescribing the use of pesticides when required.

GLG’S AGRICULTURAL ADVANTAGE IS ALSO DUE TO:

A PROFESSIONAL AGRICULTURE TEAM

Bengbu Huinong Stevia High Tech Development Limited (“Bengbu”) is a 100% wholly owned foreign enterprise (WOFE) established by GLG in September, 2007.

Bengbu’s focus is on new stevia varieties development and stevia agricultural management. Its activities also include stevia scientific research and growing production & operations as well as technical support to farmers.

Mr. Wang Qibin is Chief Agriculture Scientist for GLG’s China headquarters as well as the General Manager for Bengbu.

IMPORTANCE OF BENGBU IN CHINA’S STEVIA INDUSTRY

Bengbu owns the only provincial level stevia institution in China—the Anhui Province Stevia Species Breeding and Cultivation Engineering Technique Research Center. In 2012, GLG’s Bengbu subsidiary established the 3221 Innovation Team to undertake stevia seedling and cultivation innovation.

GLG’s Development of Patented Stevia Varieties

GLG has developed its new stevia varieties through use of its proprietary patented non-GMO technology. After years of research, Bengbu has developed the “Huinong” series of stevia plant varieties, known as H1, H2, H3, H4. The Huinong series have obtained the Science and Technology Achievement Award from the Department of China National Science and Technology. Both the total steviol glycoside (TSG) content and the dry leaf yield for the H3 variety and H4 variety occupy the leading position in China.

Bengbu has four standard stevia seed breeding bases which cover 1000 Mu (167 acres), and 5 stevia seed production bases which can produce thousands of kilograms of seeds per year. This would support thousands of mu of land for growing stevia.
GLG’s Bengbu is also focused on training not only GLG technicians but also farmers on stevia cultivation training courses.

A Professional Agriculture Team Yields Success

The GLG group’s professional agriculture research team has developed new stevia varieties with high dry leaf yield, high Total Steviol Glycoside content, high Rebaudioside A and high resistance to disease by combining single plant nurturing and field trials, systematically selecting superior individuals and selecting excellent combinations.

GLG has filed one international and five national stevia cultivation technology patents. The Bengbu research team is now developing a new varieties that will generate higher levels of additional glycosides such as Rebaudioside C, D and M.

Currently China is the biggest stevia producer in the world and it is estimated that China accounts for 80% of the world’s stevia crop.

• GLG has established 10 stevia commercial growing bases in 10 major provinces giving it agricultural diversity and protecting against any natural disasters that any one growing area may encounter.

• GLG operates one-third of the country’s total stevia growing area with potential stevia growing area covering more than 50,000 acres.

• This leading role is driven by the good government relations that GLG has, the trust it has developed with the farming community, the industry leading stevia seeds, its agricultural business model and its focus on improving farming incomes.

GLG’S SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES

GLG’s Triple bottom line philosophy guides our company’s focus to our stakeholders rather than just our shareholders. Our stakeholders include anyone who might be affected by our company or industry’s practices, from workers to the surrounding communities, shareholders and beyond. Read more about our triple bottom line accomplishments and commitments in GLG’s Sustainability Report here.

WATER: All GLG facilities have wastewater treatment systems. Wastewater is treated to COD 100 before being discharged into the local sewage system and then onto the waste water treatment system.

LAND: Facilities are built inside major growing areas with a surrounding circular ring of satellite buying stations. This eases individual farmer burden for leaf delivery and consolidates loads.

COMMUNITY: GLG signs a contract with our farmers to ensure the use of our patented seeds and strict guidelines regarding the use of pesticides and fertilizers. GLG’s patented seeds offer our growers more income due to increased yield, disease resistance, and significantly less labour.

THE ONLY HYBRID STEVIA SEED IN THE WORLD

Over the past 15 years, GLG’s agricultural expertise has produced the best stevia leaf in the world (disease resistant, large-leafed plants containing, crucially, a high percentage of both rebaudioside A and total glycosides) as well as the only hybrid stevia seed in the world.

Notably, the H3 series is the only high-RA content seed available for commercial use, and the H4 has the highest content of RA yet. The high levels of total steviol glycosides, RA, leaf yield, and disease resistance make the H3 seed and H4 seedlings the absolute leaders in the stevia industry.

GLG’s Stevia Agriculture

Stevia growing area

LARGEST GROWING AREA

With an estimated 80% of the world’s stevia acreage, China’s stevia growing area is much larger than that of Kenya and Paraguay.

Geographic diversification

GEOGRAPHIC DIVERSIFICATION

GLG’s stevia growing areas are widely distributed and less vulnerable to natural disasters. This geographic diversification is essential to guarantee a reliable annual stevia harvest.

Stevia farmers history

30 YEARS OF GROWING HISTORY

After years of training and development, GLG has developed a long term relationship with stevia farmers across the country. Their strong foundation and experience for growing stevia matches real demand with supply to ensure the farmers receive a stable income.

LOW RISK CONTRACT FARMING MODEL

Through “Company + Farmer + Growing Base” and “Company + Cooperation + Farmer” flexible modes, GLG has established the mature farmer cooperation model and the raw material procurement model.

Glycoside development

SINGLE CROP CYCLES YIELD HIGHER GLYCOSIDE DEVELOPMENT

GLG starts with a seed and grows a new plant compared to harvesting off the same plant multiple times.

LOW COSTS & FAIR RETURN TO FARMERS

China has historically paid lower stevia leaf prices than other countries that grow stevia. However, GLG’s Fair Wage program ensures farmers get a better wage than many other countries.
